Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas met today with Union for the Mediterranean Secretary General Fathallah Sijilmassi.
Mr. Sijilmassi described Greece as a country of strategic importance in the Mediterranean space, thus reaffirming the vital role Greece is being called upon to play within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.
The Greek side expressed its undivided political support for the Union for the Mediterranean, as well as for the Secretary General, as a broadly representative organization that has 43 members and that may prove catalytic in the democratic transition and socioeconomic development of all the countries of the region.
There was a coincidence of views as to the need to intensify the cooperation between Greece and the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, ahead of and during the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union (2014), particularly in sectors of special interest to Greece, including energy, water resources, the environment, tourism, and maritime transport.
