Immediately following Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias’ return from Mongolia, a meeting was held today to assess the developments in our neighbouring country and evaluate the new security environment in the region. Participants in the meeting included the political and civil leadership of the Foreign Ministry, the Alternate Minister for Citizen Protection, and a representative of the Defense Ministry.
It was underscored at the meeting that Greece unequivocally condemns the attempted coup and disruption of constitutional order in Turkey. Dedication to the principles of democracy and constitutional legality is a matter of principle for the Greek people. It was stressed once again that our country is in favor of the protection of rule of law and the development of democracy in Turkey. Also highlighted was the need for restraint to be shown and for all necessary measures to be taken to avert further escalation of violence, to protect human lives, and to restore calm.
Greece always maintains open channels of communication and understanding with Turkey, to the benefit of bilateral cooperation and regional peace and stability.
