Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias met in New York today, on the margins of High-Level Week of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
During the meeting, Mr. Kotzias referred to Greece’s close, age-old ties of friendship with the Arab states and noted the need for further intensification of cooperation between the European Union and the Arab League.
Topics of interest in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean region were discussed as well. The Minister of Foreign Affairs underscored our country’s important role as a stabilising factor in the region, and in this context he briefed the Secretary-General on Greece’s initiatives aimed at enhancing regional stability and promoting peace in the wider region through the adoption of a positive agenda.
More specifically, he referred to the Rhodes Conference for Security and Stability, which will reconvene within the first six months of 2018, and to the International Conference on Religious and Cultural Pluralism and Peaceful Coexistence in the Middle East, which will reconvene in Athens at the end of October, inviting his interlocutor to attend.
