Deputy FM Amanatidis’ Philhellenism and International Solidarity Day message (19 April 2016)

With a feeling of pride and in a spirit of diligence, it is with great pleasure and honor that I address all members of the Greek Diaspora, on the occasion of the Day of Philhellenism and International Solidarity.

192 years since the death of the distinguished philhellene Lord Byron, the radiance of the Greek spirit, of the humanitarian ideal, as expressed in every verse, every concept of the ancient Greek and modern European discourse, remains a beacon for eminent figures and citizens, who align themselves to the actions of the philhellenes of preceding generations, in the defense and promotion of Greek rights in view of multidimensional challenges.

In this volatile and rapidly changing international environment, the need to strengthen and develop once more the spirit of philhellenism, becomes more evident. Indeed, the reinforcement and activation of modern philhellenism, as the finest ambassador of Greek affairs, lies in the forefront of our efforts, for they can perform a crucial role with regards to the capitalization of Greek comparative advantages, the shaping of world opinion and in aggregating our efforts in the defense of Greek and unitedly European principles and values.

The concrete humanism of modern Greeks on the coasts of the Greek islands, may indeed form the basis for a modern time philhellenism, which is reflected in the overt support of prominent international figures and the development of the philhellenic spirit, rooted in the Greek and European principles of solidarity, fraternity and democracy.
