A Tribute for the Commemoration of the Battle of Crete

Tuesday, 25 May 2021

These days we commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Crete, and honour those who sacrificed their life in the name of freedom, fighting against nazism. Here in South Australia, we particularly honour those ANZACs who fought in our motherland to fend-off the German invasion.

The atrocities of the bloody battle lasted from 20th May until 1st June 1941. Unfortunately, the Battle of Crete was lost, though the Allies eventually emerged victorious from the Second World War.

The participation of Australian soldiers in the Battle of Crete gave them the opportunity to see our beautiful country and to forge warm ties with the hospitable people of Greece, thus strengthening the friendship between Greece and Australia. Those bonds have been embedded in our hearts and remain alive to this day.

This year, in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, the Consulate-General of Greece in Adelaide will hold an official wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial, North Terrace, Adelaide, on Sunday 30 May, at 11:00 a.m.

May our memory of the fallen be eternal!
Long live Greece!
Long live Australia!
