Commemoration of “OHI Day” in Melbourne
The Consul General, Mr. D. Michalopoulos, took part, on 27 and 28 October in Melbourne, in the commemoration of the 79th anniversary of “OHI Day” i.e. the day in which in 1940 Italy declared war on Greece. A doxology service was held at the Holy Monastery of “Axion Estin” in Northcote, presided by his Eminence, the Archbishop Myron of New Zealand, followed by a Trisagion Service and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monastery’s Cenotaph, the later organised by the Australian Greek Ex-Servicemen’s Association. On the day of the anniversary, the Consul General gave a short speech and laid wreaths at the Australian Greek Memorial and at the Shrine of Remembrance, in a ceremony organised by the Returned and Services League of Australia / Hellenic Sub Branch.
Present at the above-mentioned events were state MPs, representing the Government of Victoria, the President of the GOCMV, representatives of federations and associations of Greek Diaspora, students from the Greek-language schools of Melbourne and many Greek-Australians.
