Consul General of Melbourne visits Tasmania (27-30 September 2018)

Tuesday, 02 October 2018

The Consul General of Melbourne visited Tasmania from 27 to 30 September 2018.  The island state is part of the consular jurisdiction of the General Consulate.

In Hobart the Consul General had meetings with the Hon. Will Hodgman, Premier of Tasmania, the Co-Director of the Tasmania State Office of the DFAT, Mr. Ch. Brewer, a Q&A with the members of the Greek Community of Tasmania, a visit to the St. George Greek Orthodox Church for Sunday Mass and finally a meeting with Mrs. J. Benson, Assistant to the Chairman / Public Relations at InCat shipbuilding company.

Greek presence in Tasmania is not very strong in numbers (about two thousand people, majority living in Hobart), nevertheless, as the Premier said in our meeting, the hard-working spirit of our law-abiding and integrated compatriots has been thoroughly appreciated,.

Greeks in Tasmania, despite the long distance from home, never forget their fatherland in difficult times.  A fundraiser was organised on 22 September at the Greek Community center in Hobart with the proceeds going to those affected by the bushfires of July 2018 in Athens.

The finalisation of the appointment of the new Greek Honorary Consul in Hobart will satisfy one of the Greek Community’s main demands and at the same time promote our country’s presence in Australia.
