Events organised by the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee in Melbourne (8 & 11 August 2018)
The Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee organised two events to honour the ANZAC campaign to the Greek island in 1915. A photo exhibition, dedicated to the Australian presence in Lemnos during the said campaign was launched on 8 August at the Queen’s Hall in the Parliament House. The Hon J. Eren MP, Minister for Veterans was the keynote speaker and in attendance were the President of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Victoria, state Ministers and MPs, members of the Consular Corps etc.
The annual commemorative service was held on 11 August at the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial at Lemnos square, where the statue in honour of the hundreds of nurses who were deployed in the military hospitals in Lemnos was unveiled three years ago, and not far from Princes pier, where the Australian troops boarded the ships to Lemnos in 1915. The British Consul General delivered the keynote address, preceded by the Mayor of Port Philip, the state Minister for Housing, the President of the Legislative Council and the Greek Consul General who gave short introductory speeches.
The Greek Consulate General would like to congratulate all the members and especially the President and the Vice-president of the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Council, Mr. Lee Tarlamis and Mrs. Christina Despoteri, respectively, for the well-organised events and for the initiatives that they have undertaken over the years to promote the significance of Lemnos in Australian history and to enhance the strong bonds of friendship between Greece and Australia.
