General Consulate of Greece in Melbourne takes part in commemorations of the Genocide of the Greeks of the Pontus region, the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece and of the Chalkidiki Revolution
The Greeks of Melbourne solemnly participated in the commemoration, organised by the Coordinating Committee of Pontian
Associations of Melbourne, of the Genocide of the Greeks of the Pontus region, which took place with a laying-wreath ceremony on May 19 at the Australian-Greek Memorial, near the Shrine of Remembrance and on May 20 with a commemorative church service at the St. Eustatius Church. Our message was clear: The victims of the Genocide ask for recognition and for their memory to remain in our hearts and minds”.
The Eptanesian Co-operative Society of Melbourne celebrated, on May 20, the 154th anniversary of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece with a commemorative church service at the “Axion Esti” monastery and with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument nearby. The Halkidikeon Association “Aristotelis Stagiritis” marked the anniversary of the Revolution of Halkidiki (17 May 1821) in the said monastery.
The General Consulate congratulates the above-mentioned associations for the organisation of the commemorations.
