Unveiling of the George Treloar Memorial in Ballarat, VIC (8 September 2019)
The Consul General, Mr. D. Michalopoulos, took part, on 8 September in Ballarat, in the ceremony to unveil the statue of George Divine Treloar, who worked as the League of Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees in Macedonia & Thrace in northern Greece from 1922 to 1926. With his tireless efforts he provided for the rehabilitation of more than one-hundred thousand Greek refugees from Asia Minor.
The event had been organised by the Merimna Pontion Kyrion of Oceania, the Central Pontian Association of Melbourne & VIC ‘Pontiaki Estia’ and the City of Ballarat. Also present were members of the state and federal Parliament, the City of Ballarat Mayor and representatives of Greek associations from Melbourne. The event was covered by local and state media.
