Efthymios Georges Costopoulos
Biographical Notice
Efthymios Georges Costopoulos is a career diplomat working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece. As of September 2023, he was appointed Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU.
Efthymios Costopoulos previously served as the first resident Ambassador of Greece to Senegal and Special Envoy for Sahel issues, as the first Consul General of Greece in Erbil, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in the General Directorate for EU Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as Head of the Political, trade and information section of the Delegation of the EU to Saudi Arabia and the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as Consul General of Greece in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in the Directorate General for External Relations of the European Commission in Brussels and in the Greek Permanent Representation to the European Union. He has participated, i.a., to the negotiations for the Treaty of Nice and for the enlargement of the European Union to Cyprus, Malta and the countries of Central Europe.
He holds a degree cum laude from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences-Po Paris), a law degree from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, a Political Science and Public Administration degree from the University of Athens and an M.Phil. in International Relations from the University of St. Andrews, UK. He authored several articles and chapters in books.
Mr. Costopoulos speaks English, French and has various degrees of working proficiency in Arabic, Spanish, German and Turkish.
He is married with two daughters and two sons.
