EU Maritime Security Strategy
The adoption of the final text of the EU Maritime Security Strategy (24 June 2014) constitutes a major achievement for the Greek Presidency (1st semester of 2014) because the concept of maritime security has significantly been widened to interest areas beyond the defense, including the growth, the employment and the energy security. This Strategy covers both internal and external aspects of the EU maritime security, taking a cross-sector approach aimed at ensuring the maximum possible security and advancing the economic interests at sea for both the EU and the EU member states.
nd semester of 2014) continued the Greek Presidency’s work on the promotion of the EU Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS), resulting in the adoption of the Action Plan on the implementation of the EUMSS (16 December 2014). Regarding the implementation of this Action Plan, our country is of the opinion that a concerted action by all the EU member states is required and also fully supports initiatives developing synergies amongst the EU member states. Furthermore, Greece attaches great importance to initiatives seeking to provide seafarers, who fall victim to piracy, especially in the West African region, with assistance and to generally enhance the ship security.
Finally, it is noteworthy to mention that the European Commission along with the European External Action Service (EEAS) carry out regular assessment exercises for the EU as a whole in the context of monitoring progress in the implementation of the EUMSS Action Plan.
