Transport
The transport sector may become one of the main development pillars of our country, contributing on the one hand to the reduction of logistics costs and on the other hand to job creation, through the development of integrated and coherent transport networks. Building up new transport infrastructure and upgrading the existing ones, in combination with Greece’s geographical location, underlie an outward-oriented Greek economy which would attract private investments and would encourage entrepreneurship, research and innovation as well.
In particular, Greece works in cooperation with the EU to promote the following strategic goals in the transport sector: a) Setting up a coherent/multimodal transport system by making the most effective use of the Trans-EuropeanTransportNetwork (ΤΕΝ-Τ), thus highlighting Greece’s potential to become a regional transport hub, b) Deployment of combined transport, involving rail and maritime transport, and location planning based on scenarios of product design, c) Funding of combined transport through public-private partnerships (PPP), d) Enhancing transport safety, e) Rationalisation of freight transport chain, f) Improving logistics efficiency, g) Putting Intelligent Transport Systems (Intelligent Transport Systems /ITS) in place, and i) Enhancing the environmental sustainability of transport system.
The efficient use of EU funding resources, stemming from the newly established European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the Program “Horizon 2020”, and the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), constitutes a high priority for our country in the context of the implementation of the above-mentioned strategic goals.
