NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Brussels, 28-29/11/2023
NATO Foreign Ministers met in Brussels, on November 28 and 29. Greece was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis.
The meeting covered a wide range of issues, anchored in the preparation of the next NATO Summit, to be held in Washington (July 2024). A special session was dedicated to the Western Balkans, with the participation of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell; this further highlighted the close NATO-EU cooperation in regions of mutual strategic importance. Furthermore, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council (NUC) was held on November 29, for the first time at the level of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, with the participation of Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba. The NUC is a new platform for the deepening of NATO-Ukraine relations, established by a decision of Heads of State and Government, at the NATO Summit in Vilnius, in July 2023.
Minister Gerapetritis focused on NATO-Ukraine and the multifaceted support that Greece provides, reaffirming the commitment to supporting Kyiv, along with the other Allies. He also emphasized Greece’s role as a pillar of stability in the Western Balkans, also through its active participation in NATO and EU operations and missions. Finally, he pointed out the threats and challenges for NATO which emanate from the South, also in light of current developments in the Middle East.
