Registration (Births, Deaths, Marriages)

REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGES IN BELGIUM:

  • Valid passports or Greek ID cards of the newly-weds.
  • Certificate of registration of the Greek spouse/es with a Municipality in Greece (not older than 6 months).
  • Original marriage certificate from the Belgian Authorities.
  • Greek spouse must attend in person for the registration of the marriage. If both spouses are Greek, only one of them needs to be present.

Provided that all documents are submitted, the marriage is registered on the same day

CIVIL WEDDING IN THE CONSULATE:

  • Application for a civil wedding to be addressed to the Consular Office (provided at the Consular Office).
  • Original marriage licenses and certificates of birth, issued by the Greek Municipalities
  • The valid passports of the future spouses or their Greek ID cards.
  • Two witnesses (holding valid passports) must attend the wedding.

In case one of the future spouses is not a Greek citizen, a certificate of no-impediment is also required. This is issued by the competent Authorities of the country of origin. The country of origin also issues the marriage license and the certificate of birth. All the above documents need to be dully legalized (Apostille stamp) by the competent Authorities of the country of origin, and dully translated in Greek.

REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS IN BELGIUM:

  • The original Belgian birth certificate of the child (that states the names of the parents).
  • Valid passports or Greek ID cards of both parents.
  • Certificate of family status by the Municipality in Greece, for the Greek spouse/es (where the marriage must appear as registered, if the parents are married). It must not be older than 6 months.
  • The Greek parent must attend in person for the registration of the birth.

In case that the parents were not married at the time of the birth, a child’s recognition deed will be issued prior to the registration. The physical presence of both parents is required.

In case that the registration takes place 3 months or more after the actual date of birth, an age verification certificate is issued. Two colour photos of the baby are required.

Provided that all documents are submitted, the birth is registered on the same day.

REGISTATION OF DIVORCE IN BELGIUM (IF DIVORCE IS ISSUED AFTER 01.03.2001)

  • Original family status certificate of the Greek spouse issued by the Municipality in Greece, where the marriage appears as registered (not older than 6 months).
  • Original Decree Absolute of the Divorce issued by the Belgian Court.
  • For church weddings: the Divorce Order issued by the parish where the wedding was performed.
  • Passports or Greek ID cards of both spouses.
  • Greek spouse must attend in person for the registration of the divorce. If both spouses are Greek, only one of them needs to be present.

Provided that all documents are submitted, the divorce is registered on the same day.

If the divorce is issued prior to the above mentioned date (01.03.2001), it can be registered only in Greece, care of the Greek national, so that the competent Greek Court may certify the validity of the foreign Court Divorce Order.

REGISTRATION OF DEATH OF GREEK NATIONALS:

  • The Greek Passport or ID card of the deceased.
  • Certificate of registration of the deceased with a Municipality in Greece (not older than 6 months).
  • Original death certificate issued by the Belgian Borough of the deceased.
  • Valid passport or Greek ID card of the person who comes to declare the death.

Provided that all documents are submitted, the death is registered on the same day.

REPATRIATION OF THE DECEASED:

  • Original death certificate issued by the Belgian Borough of the deceased (dully legalized by an Apostille stamp by the competent Belgian Authorities.
  • Death certificate issued by the Consular Office (provided that the deceased was a Greek National).
  • Coroner’s certificate (dully legalized by an Apostille stamp by the competent Belgian Authorities) (care of the Funeral Services Agency).
  • Embalmment certificate (dully legalized by an Apostille stamp by the competent Belgian Authorities) (care of the Funeral Services Agency).
  • “Permission to exit Belgium” certificate issued by the relevant Belgian Authority (care of the Funeral Services Agency).

Previous communication with the Consular Office (tel. 02/5455510) is required, in order to arrange a date for the sealing.
