European Book Prize awarded to Greek author Christos Chomenidis (Brussels, 8.12.2021)
The Eurobean Book Prize (Prix du Livre Européen) for 2021 was awarded during a ceremony that took place on 8 December at the European Parliament in Brussels. The prize, which was first introduced in 2007, with ex European Commission President Jacque Delors as the first Jury Chairman, is awarded annually to books for their contribution to promoting European values. The 2021 prize was awarded to Greek author Christos Homenidis for his novel "Niki". In a video message addressing the event, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis discussed the winning novel, stressing that the award honours not just this work, but contemporary Greek literature and Greece. Chairman of the Jury, Danish director Adam Price European parliament Vice-Presidents Dimitrios Papadimoulis and Roberta Metsola attended the ceremony panel.
In his speech, the Christos Chomenidis stressed that the award represents a success not only for him but also for the country, while expressing confidence in the potential of Greece to be re-introduced to the world through the country’s cultural creation.
The award ceremony, which took place with a small number of guests, due to the pandemic limitations of the pandemic, was attended by the Ambassador of Greece to Belgium Dionysios Kalambrezos, as well as representatives of publishing houses, cultural organisations, etc.
