Ioannis Chatzantonakis
Consul General of the Hellenic Republic in Toronto
Ioannis Chatzantonakis was born in Athens and holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics with distinction from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium.
From 2023 to 2024, he served as the Director of the H1 Directorate for Greeks Abroad and the C3 Directorate of the European Parliament of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens. In 2023, before his promotion to Minister Plenipotentiary,he was the Deputy Director of the A9 Political Directorate for Asia and Oceania.
From 2017 to 2022, he was posted as Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa. Between 2014 and 2017, he held the position of First Counsellor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served in the C4 Directorate of Justice, Home Affairs, Migration & Schengen, Acting Director of the ST2 Directorate of IT and Communications, and as the Deputy Director of both the ST General Directorate of Personnel & Administration and the A10 Political Directorate for Asia and Oceania.
From 2010 to 2014, he was posted as Consul General in Cairo, Egypt. Prior to this, between 2007 and 2010, he served as Second Counsellor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Director of the Diplomatic Cabinet of the Prime Minister. From 2003 to 2007, he was posted to Paris, France as Secretary of the Embassy of Greece and from 2000 to 2003, he held the same position at the Embassy of Greece in Tehran, Iran. He began his career as an Attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens in 1998.
He is the co-author of the work: Guide to the Entry Exams for the Hellenic Diplomatic Service, Ed. Sakkoulas (Athens) 1999.
He has been honored with the Order of the Golden Lion of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria, Egypt.
He is fluent in Greek, French, and English.
Ioannis Chatzantonakis is married to Dr. Eleni Griva and they have a son.
