Visit of the Greek Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy in Shanghai (“Pudong Shipping Week”)—Presence of the Consul General

The visit (29.11-02.12) of the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy, Mr. Stefanos Gkikas took place in the framework of the "Pudong Shipping Week 2024" event, with the theme " Navigating an Intelligent and Diverse Ecosystem". More specifically, a special conference "Greek Shipping Day" (“Hellenic Day of Shipping”) was organized jointly, among other supporters, by the Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Government and Transportation Commission and the "Association of Banking and Financial Executives of Hellenic Shipping".   

The Deputy Minister attended the event as a keynote speaker and participated in meetings with Chinese officials, accompanied by the Consul General, Mr. Georgios Partheniou, and the Maritime Attache, Stavros Kakarouchas.

Indicatively, in the presence of many Chinese government officials and representatives of maritime entities, and representatives of shipping companies, Mr. Gkikas addressed the challenges of Greek and global shipping, and the key priorities of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy. In the context of his visit, the Deputy Minister highlighted the main priorities of the Greek flagship projects.

Specifically, he met with the Executive Vice President of COSCO Shipping Group, Yangfan Chen, representatives from the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and the Chinese Shipowners Association.

He elaborated on Greece's position on the need for cooperation between the two countries in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) framework towards the decarbonisation, including the possibility of further cooperation and investment, indicatively in the energy sector. In addition, the issue of establishing cooperation with Chinese shipyards which build ships for a large number of Greek shipowners was raised.

It is noted that Greece's presence at the Pudong Shipping Week 2024 was of significant impact, as several Greek companies belonging to the shipping sector participated, as well as the "Association of Banking and Financial Executives of Hellenic Shipping" with its board of directors.

The Deputy Minister, together with the Consul General, also visited Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), where they met with the Dean, academic staff and Chinese students of the Department of Greek language.

In addition, Mr. Gkikas was briefed on Consulate’s activities by the Consul General and the Maritime Attache during his visit to the premises of the Consulate General of Greece in Shanghai.
