13/02/2020 - New announcement of the Embassy of Greece on the coronavirus cases in China

Thursday, 13 February 2020

According to the data provided by the authorities, as of February 13, 2020, 59.883 cases of the new coronavirus have been confirmed in China and 1.368 patients have died. The majority of cases has been reported in Hubei province, notably in the city of Wuhan, which has been the center of the outbreak. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the epidemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Following the end of the holiday period after the Chinese New Year, the return of citizens to urban centers and the gradual resumption of business and services, the spread of the epidemic in China is moving to a critical stage.

In many municipalities, including Beijing, restrictive measures still apply, such as controls at city entry and exit points, temperature measurement when entering all buildings and the subway, mandatory use of a mask and prevention of public gatherings. Many public transport services have been suspended and local authorities request from the returning citizens to remain at home for health monitoring, at least 3 days, for those recently traveled outside urban areas and 14 days for those visited Hubei province or came in close contact with people from that area.

Chinese universities and research institutes have postponed the start of their courses until further notice. Greek students are advised to contact their respective educational institutions.

The Embassy recommends that Greek citizens limit all travel to China to that which is absolutely necessary, given that, apart from the risk of falling ill, they should expect to meet with significant difficulties with transport and everyday life. In case traveling to China is deemed absolutely necessary, Greek citizens are advised to comply with the National Public Health Organization (EODY) travel instructions and make in advance provisions of face masks and hand sanitizers, as these items are currently in shortage.

Greek citizens already in China are advised to fully comply with the instructions of local authorities and avoid traveling for any reason to Hubei province and other regions where travel has been restricted. Hygiene measures (regular hand washing, use of protective mask in public places) and compliance with the above-mentioned precautions (avoidance of crowds in closed areas) are recommended. In case of any symptoms, they should contact immediately the nearest hospitals for further instructions.

Citizens who wish to return to Greece, except of those still in Hubei province, can still travel back via commercial flights - albeit with increasing difficulty. Therefore, Greek citizens are encouraged to hasten their decision.
