Opening ceremony of “Eureka! Science, Art and Technology of the Ancient Greeks” in China Science and Technology Museum (Beijing, 3.11.2017)

Celebrating Greece-China Year of Cultural Exchanges and Cultural Industries’ Cooperation, the exhibition “Eureka! Science, Art and Technology of the Ancient Greeks” kicked off on Friday, November 3 2017 in Beijing, in China Science and Technology Museum. Featuring major techonological achievements in the fields of shipbuliding, mechanical engineering, telecommunications, constructions, astronomy, the exhibition was organized by the Herakleidon Museum in collaboration with the Association for the Study of Ancient Greek Technology and Mr. Theodosis P. Tasios, Professor Emeritus of the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, as scientific consultant.

In her speech at the opening ceremony, Minister Counselor, Ms.Elisabeth Fotiadou, explained that the title of the exhibition “Eureka!” which means in Greek “I found the solution to a problem” perfectly matches to the content of the exhibition which celebrates the quest of mind of ancient Greeks, who, in their effort to interpret the world, developed philosophy, science and technology. Furthermore, Ms. Fotiadou referred to the exhibition of Chinese technology currently hosted in Greece, in Herakleidon Museum, in the context of Greece-China Year of Cultural Exchanges and Cultural Industries’ Cooperation, and elaborated on the wider Greece-China cooperation in the fields of museums, translation, theater, restoration of antiquities, cinematic art.

The founder of Herakleidon Museum, Mr. Pavlos Fyros, underlined the innovative spirit of ancient Greeks as a result of their efforts to give solutions to everyday-life problems, and referred to the cooperation of the two museums.

The Director of China Science and Technology Museum. Mr. Yin Hao, stressed that these exchanges are a concrete measure in the context of One Belt One Road initiative, and will promote the communication and cooperation of the Chinese Museum with relevant Greek museums.

The member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr.Wu Xiangping, underlined that the spirit and the rational of ancient Greeks still inspire modern scientific thought.

With the contribution of the Press and Communication Office in Beijing, numerous Chinese media attended the opening ceremony and published interviews of the Herakleidon Museum founder, Mr. Fyros, as well as articles related to the exhibition and to the cooperation of the two countries in the field of museums.
