Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias expresses condolences at the passing of the Mayor of Famagusta, Alexis Galanos (Athens, 16 July 2019)

I express deep sadness at the passing of Alexis Galanos, the mayor of Famagusta since 2006. During his long and important career in the public life of Cyprus, the Cypriot State honoured him with a number of offices, the highest of which was that of President of the House of Representatives.

Alexis Galanos fought passionately and diligently for the rights of Cypriot Hellenism, the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops, the reunification of Cyprus, for the vindication of the struggle of Famagusta’s legal residents and their return to the native land of Onesilos and Evagoras.

I express my sincere condolences to his wife, his loved ones and the citizens of Famagusta.
