Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis meets with U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt (Athens, 6 February 2020)Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis met with the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt. During the meeting, they discussed bilateral cooperation and regional issues, and reaffirmed the excellent relations between Greece and the U.S.

Mr. Pyatt referred to the Greek Prime Minister’s recent and very successful visit to the U.S. He also highlighted the stabilising role our country plays in the wider region, especially at a time when a number of destabilising factors have emerged. Finally, he referred to the strong interest of American businesses in carrying out investments in Greece.

Mr. Varvitsiotis welcomed the interest of American businesses and stressed that he looks forward to strengthened bilateral economic relations between the two countries, with emphasis on the growth of American investments in Greece.

Promotion of EU Enlargement in the Western Balkans was also the focus of discussion, and specifically the candidacies of Albania and North Macedonia. In this context, Mr. Varvitsiotis briefed the U.S. Ambassador on Greece’s positions and the Greek initiative for holding a Conference of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on 24 February, in Thessaloniki, to promote the European perspective of the Western Balkans.
