“We had a useful meeting to look at where we are in the negotiation process. As you know, Greece is participating constructively and firmly supports the negotiations under the UN and Mr. Nimetz’s personal mandate.
In this context we submitted a specific proposal for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two sides; a memorandum aimed at giving momentum to the process, stipulating the parameters of the solution.
Today we had the opportunity to present the Greek initiative in detail to Mr. Nimetz and the Skopje representative.
So far, there has been no response from the other side as to the essential parameters of our proposal. I think that the Greek proposal is the ideal foundation for making progress, provided, naturally, there is the requisite desire and political will from the Skopje side as well.
I will brief the Greek government on the meetings I had here so that the next steps can be worked out within the framework of our proposal.
Greece will continue to work intensively to achieve a definitive solution on the name issue, because we believe that this will benefit the two peoples, the consolidation of good neighbourly relations, and regional stability.”
