Greece welcomes the fall of Assad’s authoritarian regime in Syria. However, peace in the country must immediately be ensured, as well as an orderly political transition to a legitimate democratic government in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Greece supports the unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Syria.
Efforts should be made to protect all civilians, including religious minorities, as well as to safeguard religious monuments and Syria’s rich cultural heritage. The restoration of democratic normality should lead to the cessation of refugee flows from the war-torn country and facilitate the safe return of Syrian refugees to their homes. Greece, as a member of the UN Security Council, and through its strong ties with the Arab world, will contribute to the fastest possible restoration of peace and prosperity in Syria.
