After months of intensive consultations, the 57 participating states of the OSCE have reached an agreement to appoint the Heads of the OSCE institutions for a three-year term.
The distinguished jurist Maria Telalian, who has served for many years as Head of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will assume the crucial position of Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The ODIHR is an independent institution, which observes elections in member states, proposes relevant legislation and provides advice on strengthening the protection of rights, fighting discrimination and promoting democratic institutions.
This unanimous election is of high symbolism and political significance for bolstering the OSCE’s activities, which is the largest European security and cooperation organization.
At a critical juncture for Europe and the world, OSCE regains momentum after a long period of difficulties setting up its institutions due to a lack of unanimity.
Through a consistent, strong and principled foreign policy, Greece is further increasing its international diplomatic capital.
