Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the acceptance of Greece's request for observer status in the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) (17.06.2023)

The Council of Foreign Ministers of the member states of the Andean Community (Comunidad Andina/CAN) accepted on Thursday, June 15, 2023, Greece’s request for participation with observer status in the Organisation. Greece submitted this request to the CAN’s General Secretariat in January 2023.

In its decision, the Council of Foreign Ministers underlines Greece's interest in further strengthening its long-standing friendly relations with CAN member states. In addition, it emphasizes that Greece's participation with observer status will further enhance cooperation and political dialogue between Greece and CAN member states.

This decision follows the signing of the Agreement on Greece’s participation with observer status in the SICA, "System of Central American Integration" (SICA - Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana) (24.02.2023), as well as the decision of the Caribbean Community (Caribbean Community/CARICOM) (17.03.2023) to accept Greece’s request for the accreditation of our Ambassador in Havana to this Organization.

The above-mentioned developments fall within the framework of strengthening relations between Greece and the countries of the wider region of Latin America and the Caribbean, providing opportunities for closer cooperation with them, especially on issues of common interest such as environmental protection. Moreover, they highlight Greece's increasingly important international role, which is no longer confined to a narrow regional geographical context.
