Today’s black anniversary of the declaration of the pseudo-state in the section of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops has only one meaning for the international community: it reminds us that an independent state which is a member of the UN and EU is still under military occupation, it reminds us that there is still an unacceptable, illegal and divisive situation.
Despite adversities, the leadership of the Republic of Cyprus is making tireless efforts for a reunited, independent and sovereign state, in which Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will be able to enjoy the benefits of coexistence and live side by side in security, freedom and prosperity within the European family.
As President Christofias is preparing to travel to the UN headquarters to meet with Mr. Eroglu, we would like to recall that the negotiations under the auspices of the UN Secretary General must lead, without timeframes or arbitration, to a solution without occupation troops, to a fair, viable, and functional solution on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions and the implementation of the community acquis; to a Cypriot and European solution. Because, in the final analysis, the most effective guarantee of the Cypriot people’s safety is full implementation of European values on the entire territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
