The unilateral declaration of the pseudo-state 28 years ago, in the section of Cyprus under Turkish military occupation, was and remains a flagrant violation of fundamental rules and principles of international law that hinders the finding of a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem.
The UN Security Council has expressly condemned this legally void action and called on all states not to recognize, not to facilitate or in any way assist the secessionist entity that calls itself the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”.
To date, Turkey has unfortunately continued to defy the Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and to provoke through new secessionist and illegal actions, such as the recent so-called “agreement on the delimitation of the continental shelf” with the pseudo-state.
Like Cyprus, Greece will never accept the Turkish invasion and occupation as irremediable. Our shared goal remains the achievement of an agreed solution based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the principles and values of the European Union. To this end, we will continue to fully support President Christofias’s efforts within the framework of the UN negotiation process.
