Bilateral Relations

Albania

Diplomatic relations between Greece and Albania were restored in 1971. Greece is represented in Albania through its Embassy in Tirana, which incorporates a Consular Office, an Economic and Commercial Affairs Office, a Public Diplomacy Office, a Defense Attaché’s Office and a Police Liaison Office.

Greece also maintains two Consulates-General in Albania, in Gjirokastër, as well as in Korcë, where there is also an Education Coordinator’s Office.

Greek-Albanian relations are marked by a broad contractual framework and by frequent exchanges of visits at all levels. The respective governments share a common political will to further promote bilateral relations, expand bilateral cooperation, and settle pending issues. In this spirit, during the visit of former Foreign Minister Mr. Dendias to Tirana on October 20th 2020, the two parties announced their agreement to refer the delimitation of their maritime zones to the International Court of Justice. Greece has lent its support to Albania’s accession to NATO, as well as to the country’s European course, on the basis of fair conditionality, the principle of own merits and respect for good neighbourly relations. It encourages Tirana to continue the necessary reforms in order for Albania’s EU accession path to proceed. Fulfillment of all criteria and the implementation of the EU acquis especially regarding the protection of the rights of the Greek National Minority, is a prerequisite for Albania’s accession to the EU.
