Bilateral Relations

Armenia

Greece was one of the first countries to recognise Armenia after its independence (21-09-1991). There is a Greek Embassy in Yerevan and an Armenian Embassy in Athens. Greek-Armenian relations have a long-standing historical background and are linked to the coexistence of Greeks and Armenians during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

Greece is one of the countries that have officially recognised the Armenian Genocide committed by the Ottomans in 1915. Similarly, the Armenian Parliament has recognised the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks.

Bilateral Relations

Greece has provided development and humanitarian assistance to Armenia in cooperation with international organisations such as the FAO, and has supported Armenia's rapprochement with European institutions. Since Armenia's declaration of independence, the two countries have been cooperating within the framework of various international organisations (UN, OSCE, CoE, CSCE, etc.).

The excellent bilateral relations are also reflected in the frequent high-level bilateral contacts. On 5-6 November 2019, the President of the Republic at the time, Mr. P. Pavlopoulos, paid an official visit to Yerevan at the invitation of his Armenian counterpart, Mr. Armen Sarkissian.

In 2020 and 2022, the Foreign Minister at the time, Mr. N. Dendias, visited Yerevan, while the Armenian Foreign Minister, Mr. Ararat Mirzoyan, reciprocated with a visit to Athens in 2022.

Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis met with Armenian Prime Minister N. Pashinyan on the sidelines of the European Political Community Summits in Prague on 6.10.2023 and in Granada on 5.10.2023.

Foreign Minister Gerapetritis met his Armenian counterpart Mr.Mirzoyan in New York on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly in September 2023.

Greek Community

In Armenia, there are about 900 expatriates, officially recognised as a minority, while more than 30,000 people of the Armenian diaspora live in Greece.
