The presence of Greeks in Austria is historical. It dates back to the 18th century, with prominent figures including Rigas Feraios, Anthimos Gazis, Neophytos Doukas, and the Ypsilantis, Sinas, and Dumba families. The number of Greeks residing in Austria has increased in recent years and is estimated to be more than 10,000 today.
The Hellenic National School of Vienna has been operating, practically without interruption since 1804, under the direction of the Holy Metropolis of Austria in the premises of its offices. It is a continuation of the oldest Greek school in the Diaspora, today functioning as an afternoon/Saturday school of mother tongue and education. It is recognized as a Greek Language Department by the Greek Ministry of Education. There are Chairs of Ancient, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies in Austrian educational institutions.
The Austrian Archaeological Institute has been active in our country since 1898 and its excavations are concentrated in the Peloponnese (Kalavryta Lousoi, Ancient Elis, Aegeira, Achaia).
