Bilateral Relations

Belarus

Greece established diplomatic relations with Belarus in 1993 and maintained an Embassy in Minsk until the end of 2003, when its operation was suspended. Since then, the Embassy of Greece in Moscow has had a parallel accreditation in Belarus. Similarly, the Belarusian Embassy in Sofia has a parallel accreditation in Greece.

As of 23 September 2013, Greece has established an Honorary Consulate in Minsk.

Bilateral Relations

The Secretary General and the Secretary General for International Economic Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited Minsk on 10-12 December 2015 for political consultations. The latest round of political consultations took place in Athens, in 2017, at the level of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Greece, like all the EU Member States, did not recognise the outcome of the presidential elections of 9 August 2020 in Belarus. The repression and the systematic violations of human rights by the Belarusian authorities led the European Union to impose sanctions. Greece strongly condemned the forced landing on 23 May 2021, in Minsk, of Ryanair flight 4978, which had taken off from Athens to Vilnius, and the subsequent arbitrary arrest of a passenger - a member of the Belarusian opposition. Belarus's position and support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 led the European Union to impose further sanctions.
