Bilateral Relations
Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has maintained diplomatic relations with our country since 2001, after the signing of a Protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations, in Athens, on March 8, 2001. Greece is represented in North Korea by the Embassy in Seoul, while the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is represented in Greece by its Embassy in Rome. Relations between the two countries are limited to rare contacts, exclusively at administrative level.
Greece advocates the peaceful resolution of the North Korean Issue through diplomatic means as the only way out, as a first step towards the long-term goal of de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and consolidation of peace, stability and security in the wider region.
Greece fully implements the UN sanctions and the additional EU ones (autonomous restrictive measures) against North Korea.
As far as religious relations are concerned, the Holy Metropolis of Korea, founded by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2004, maintains an organized parish in Pyongyang.
