The Greek presence in Georgia dates back to antiquity. Beyond the historical ties between the two peoples, bilateral political relations are based on Greece's interest in maintaining strong ties with the strategic region of the South Caucasus and Georgia's interest in developing its relations with EU and NATO member states, as well as on the mutual interest in further strengthening bilateral relations. The Foreign Minister of Georgia, Mr I. Darchiashvili, paid a visit to Athens on the 15th of February 2023. Greece supports the peaceful resolution of the Abkhazia and South Ossetia issues and supports the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia in accordance with the principles of International Law and the UN Charter. Greece has always supported the development of a close and strong partnership between the EU and Georgia on the basis of the Association Agreement. The draft Conclusions on the Enlargement were presented on 10.11.2023, with a view to their adoption by the Council of General Affairs in December and their approval by the European Council of the same month. The European Council of 14-15.12.23 decided to grant Georgia candidate country status subject to compliance with the Commission’s recommendations.
