Israel

Bilateral Relations

The deepening of Greek-Israeli relations is based on the significant potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in a number of sectors, such as the economy, defense, trade, tourism, investments, rural development, technology, energy, the environment, shipping and education. The multifaceted cooperation between the two countries aims to promote development and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, inclusive and not directed against any third party, and is dictated by the multiple security challenges in the region. The Greece-Israel relationship has acquired characteristics of strategic cooperation. Visits are frequent and cooperation is extensive in a wide range of areas. On 4.9.2023 a trilateral summit between Greece, Cyprus and Israel was held in Nicosia, while on 20.9.2023 a trilateral meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Greece, Cyprus and Israel was held in New York, on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly. The most important recent achievements of bilateral cooperation include, in the defense sector, the agreement on cooperation in the International Air Force Training Centre in Kalamata (inaugurated on 21.10.2022), the 3+1 cooperation with the US, and in the energy sector, the agreement on the East Med pipeline (Intergovernmental Agreement between Greece, Cyprus and Israel, 2.1.2020). An important development in bilateral Greek-Israeli relations was the decision of Greece, based on Law 4018/30.09.2011, which allows Holocaust survivors and their descendants to regain Greek citizenship. This is a gesture of great emotional and symbolic value. Finally, the continued interest of the Greek State in the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which is the living link of Orthodox Christians with the Holy Land, is particularly noted. With regard to the current crisis in the Middle East region, following the terrorist attack by Hamas on 7 October and Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip, our country's positions are clear: Greece condemns terrorism, supports Israel's right to self-defence, while respecting international humanitarian law, and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages. At the same time, Greece emphasizes the need to prevent the escalation of the conflict, to protect civilians, and above all to address the consequences of the humanitarian crisis, through the implementation of extensive humanitarian pauses and the creation of humanitarian corridors for the safe and rapid delivery of aid to the people of Gaza. Finally, as a way of defusing the current crisis, our country supports the need to revive the political process towards the creation of two states, as the only viable and peaceful solution to the Middle Eastern issue, in accordance with the principles of international law and the relevant United Nations Resolutions. This proposal is the only one that satisfactorily responds to Israel's long-standing demand for security and the Palestinians' demand for an independent and sovereign state, on the pre-1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.
