Bilateral Relations

Japan

Greece and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1899. There has been a Greek Embassy in Tokyo since 1960, and a Japanese Embassy in Athens since the same year, when it was decided to upgrade the Japanese Consulate which had opened in 1956. Since then the two countries have enjoyed excellent relations in all fields, with close cooperation and mutual respect between two peoples who represent ancient cultures.

Bilateral Relations

Greece and Japan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1899. In the field of political cooperation, the two countries are working closely together to upgrade their bilateral relations as well as their response to international crises and to current issues of international interest. They also cooperate closely and provide reciprocal support in matters of direct national interest, and mutually support each other’s candidacies for positions in international organizations. Greece's maritime relations with Japan are at a long-standing very good level. The two countries have common interests in the construction of commercial ships for seventy years (in the last 5 years 116 ships of Greek interests have been built in Japan), while the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of maritime technology and industry (2019) confirms, among other things, the high level of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of safe, environmentally friendly and energy efficient maritime technology. On 30-31.01.2023, the Prime Minister went on a working visit to Japan, accompanied by the Minister of Digital Governance and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Fragogiannis, accompanied by a business delegation.
