Bilateral Relations

Jordan

Greece has an Embassy in Amman, and Jordan maintains an Embassy in Athens.

Bilateral Relations

The excellent level of bilateral relations between Greece and Jordan is reflected upon the close cooperation on issues of regional and international interest, both at a bilateral level and within the framework of International Organizations. The highly positive attitude of the Jordanian society towards Greece is reinforced by the fact that a significant number of Jordanians (more than 2,500) are graduates of Greek universities, benefiting from scholarship programmes, including a significant number of scholarships in Greek military schools. Greece considers Jordan a force of stability in the Middle East, and is eager to offer any means of support, especially in relation to the heavy burden it bears in hosting Palestinian and Syrian refugees.  Jordan is also considered as one of the most important interlocutors of the European Union on matters of security and stability in the Middle East and enjoys full support, given the disproportionate burden that the country is facing. The constructive role played by the Hashemite Kingdom in reaching a final and lasting solution to Israeli-Palestinian conflict, on the basis of a two-state solution, is particularly noteworthy. Jordan, not unlike Greece, is against any unilateral action that could hinder the conclusion of a final resolution based on direct negotiations. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which has traditionally held a prominent position in Jordanian society with at least 120.000 congregation, forms another strong bond between Greece and Jordan. In fact, the King of Jordan is deemed as the Patriarchate’s Custodian. Trilateral Cooperation between Greece, Jordan and Cyprus Our countries’ cooperation was reinforced with the first trilateral meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Greece, Jordan and Cyprus on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council on 18.01.2016, in Brussels. The three Ministers discussed a wide range of issues of regional and international interest, with emphasis on migration, terrorism, the peace process and the situation in the Middle East, as well as developments in the energy sector. They also examined the prospects for trilateral cooperation in areas, such as economic and trade collaboration, counter-terrorism, security and information exchange, culture, education and technology, as well as ways to support Jordan in its relations with the EU. The first Trilateral Summit took place in Nicosia on January 16, 2018, while the second one was held in Amman on April 14, 2019. The third and latest, took place in Athens, on 28.7.2021, where the following areas were identified as cooperation targets for the future: culture and education, trade, food safety, tourism, energy, agriculture, water management, enviromental protection, healthcare, investments.
