Bilateral Relations

Kuwait

Our country established diplomatic relations with Kuwait in 1964 and maintains an Embassy in the city of Kuwait. Kuwait has an Embassy in Athens.

Bilateral Relations

Bilateral political relations with Kuwait are particularly good, and there is considerable room for further developing our political, economic and cultural cooperation. Kuwait considers Greece a crucial partner, as an EU country that better understands the issues and challenges of the Arab world. Greece was a member of the Coalition Forces that contributed to the liberation of Kuwait from Iraq in 1991. A Memorandum of Understanding for bilateral consultations has been concluded between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries, while the last visit of a Greek Foreign Minister to Kuwait took place on 18-19.11.2019. Under the Archaeological Cooperation Agreement of 2007, two official Greek archaeological missions to Kuwait have taken place, where Greek archaeologists carried out excavations and maintenance work at the Hellenistic fortress of Failaka Island (Dec. 2007 - Jan. 2008, Jan. 2009 - Feb. 2009). The name of the island comes from the Greek ‘’Fylakion’’. During the campaign of Alexander the Great, the island was colonized by Greeks, who named it Ikaria because of its geographical similarity with the homonymous island of the Aegean. Elements of Greek mythology are still preserved in local mythology. Greek presence in Kuwait is limited to a few people, mainly employees of Greek or foreign companies.
