Bilateral Relations
Malta
There is mutual representation at the level of Embassies, which operate in Athens and Valletta. On 9.12.2004 our country opened an Embassy in Malta.
Bilateral Relations
Educational and cultural relations between Greece and Malta are governed by the Educational Agreement of 1978, which is implemented through executive programs. During the visit of the Maltese Foreign Minister, Mr. Borg (27.04.2023), a new Protocol of Bilateral Cultural Cooperation was signed between the two sides. In 2019, a Department of Greek Studies was established for the needs of the Greek community in Malta.
The Greek community is limited (about 1200 people), with 2nd and 3rd generation descendants for whose needs the Holy Church of St. Nicholas operates. Similarly, there is a community of 3,000-4,000 Melitians, settled in Corfu and Kefalonia.
SOVEREIGN MILITARY ORDER OF MALTA
On 16.12.2021 the agreement on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Hellenic Republic and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (full title: "Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodesand of Malta") entered into force. The Embassy of Greece in the Holy See has a parallel accreditation in the Order of Malta (from 4.10.2022). The Order of Malta, represented by the Grand Chancellor, Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo, awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Knights of Malta to the then Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr.Varvitsiotis, for his contribution to the establishment of diplomatic relations with Greece (Rome, 4.11.2022).
