Bilateral Relations

Montenegro

Greece recognized Montenegro on June 13, 2006. During the visit of the Montenegrin Foreign Minister to Athens, in December of the same year, a Protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed. In February 2007, the Consulate General in Podgorica, established in 1998, was upgraded to an Embassy. Today, the Greek Embassy in Podgorica has a Consular Office. The Office of the Defence Attaché in Belgrade is also in charge of Montenegro. Montenegro has maintained an Embassy in Athens since September 2009.

Bilateral Relations

Since Montenegro's accession to NATO in June 2017, bilateral relations have developed further as, from June 2018, Greece undertook air policing overMontenegro, jointly with Italy. In March 2019, the first official visit of a President of the Hellenic Republic since Montenegro’s independence took place, which gave new impetus to bilateral relations. Greece is ready to actively support Montenegro's reform efforts with a view to enhancing its European perspective through the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in 2011.
