Bilateral Relations
Portugal
There is mutual representation at the level of Embassies, which operate in Athens and Lisbon. The Embassy of Greece in Lisbon was established in 1946. On 26.10.2018, an Honorary Consulate was inaugurated in Porto, the country's second largest city, where most of the industrial activity is concentrated. Our country also maintains Honorary Consulates in the cities of Porto, Funchal (Madeira Island) and Ponta Delgada (Azores Islands). The twinning between the Municipalities of Cascais and Lavreotiki (27.02.2023) and the cooperation between the Municipalities of Cholargos and Aveiro (1998) should also be noted.
Bilateral Relations
The two Mediterranean countries also have much in common in the field of culture, with scholarship and scientific exchange programs in place. Educational relations between Greece and Portugal are governed by the 1980 Education Agreement. The Institute of Foreign Languages and Literature of the New University of Lisbon has a Department of Modern Greek Studies, which officially grants the Greek Language Centre's Greek Language Certificate. On 7.5.2021 a Protocol of Cooperation between the Camões Institute and the Kapodistrian University of Athens was signed. Ancient Greek is taught at the Universities of Coimbra, Lisbon and Algarve. It is estimated that there are about 800 Greeks or citizens of Greek origin living in Portugal. In April 2017, a Greek-Portuguese cultural association called "Parafonia" was founded.
