Bilateral Relations

Republic of Korea

The diplomatic relations between the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Korea were established in 1961. The Greek Embassy in Seoul was established on February 15, 1991, and the Korean Embassy in Athens on July 6, 1973.

Bilateral Relations

The relations between Greece and the Republic of Korea are based on common principles and values, are cordial and traditionally friendly, with strong historical ties, due to the participation of the Greek Expeditionary Force in the Korean War (1950-1953). The visit of the former President of the Republic, K. Papoulias, in December 2013, to Seoul, was important for our bilateral relations, as well as the visit to Greece, in October 2017, of the South Korean Prime Minister at the time, Mr. Lee Nak-Yeon, on the occasion of the Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremony for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.In addition, in November 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time, Mr. N. Kotzias, made the first official visit of a Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs to South Korea. The Deputy Minister of National Defense at the time, Mr. A. Stefanis, participated as a representative of the Greek Government in the events organized by the Government of South Korea, from November 10 to 13, 2020, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. In October 2023, the Prime Minister of Korea, Mr. Han Duck-soo, visited our country and held meetings with the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister. The Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Korea cooperate within the UN framework. Also, in the framework of Europe-Asia countries’ cooperation, Greece, as an EU member-state, and the Republic of Korea participate in the Interregional Europe-Asia Dialogue Process, ASEM .
