Greece and Syria maintain Embassies in Damascus and Athens respectively, while the representation, while the representation takes place at the level of Chargé d’affaires.
Bilateral Relations
The military conflict in Syria, the security conditions and the sanctions imposed by the EU and the USA against the Syrian government and against certain individuals and companies in the last eight years have not allowed the maintenance or development of relations in the field of trade and economic relations.
There are about 1,500 people of Greek descent in Syria, most of whom have Syrian nationality and live in Aleppo – Syria’s main trade and financial centre – and Damascus. Since 1913, Damascus has had a small organised Greek community (150 members) that participates in the proceedings of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad.
Greek language learning is relatively strong in Syria and is encouraged by bilateral academic cooperation programmes.
