Our country supports the ‘’Step for Step’’ approach, of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Syria, Mr. Geir Pedersen, considering it a step that will lead to the achievement of a viable solution through negotiations, involving all the factions involved and guaranteeing the unity, national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, the withdrawal of foreign forces, as well as the return of refugees to their homes, in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254/2015. In this context, we declare our readiness, in cooperation with Mr. Pedersen, to take an active role in the international effort to resolve the Syrian issue. Proof of the importance that Greece attaches to Syria was the hosting of the informal meeting Retreat on Syria in Athens (21-23 April 2023), with the participation of the Special Envoys and Heads of Mission of the EU Member States for Syria and the presence of Mr. Pedersen. At the same time our country supports the dispatch of humanitarian aid to Syria. In this regard, Greece dispatched, in 20.02.2023, through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, humanitarian aid to deal with the consequences of the earthquake of February the 6th, which was delivered to the International Organization for Migration of the UN in Gaziantep and from there it was channeled to Northwest Syria. The 26 tonnes of aid comprised of medicines, medical equipment, and basic necessities (tents, folding beds, blankets and bed linen).
