Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kostas Fragogiannis to visit Libya (04.07.2021)

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kostas Fragogiannis will make a two-day working visit to Libya, on 4 and 5 July, with stops at Tripoli and Benghazi. Secretary General for International Economic Affairs and Openness, Ioannis Smirlis, will participate in the Greek delegation.
The Deputy Minister’s trip follows two visits made within a week of each other, one by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during which the Greek Embassy in Tripoli was reopened, and the other by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias in Eastern Libya last April.
The purpose of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kostas Fragogiannis’ visit is the strengthening of economic and trade relations between the two countries, in view of the consolidation of bilateral cooperation, and the exploration of business opportunities offered by the normalization of the political situation in Libya. The upcoming reconstruction of Libya and the rebuilding of its infrastructure can offer significant prospects for Greek businesses, mainly in the infrastructure, energy, medical services and transport sectors.
On Sunday, the Greek delegation will have extensive contacts with Libyan government officials and business associations in Tripoli. The meetings will continue on Monday in Benghazi, on the occasion of the re-establishment of the Greek Consulate General there, the first of a European country to operate in Eastern Libya.
Moreover, the Deputy Minister and the Greek delegation will attend the ceremony for the inauguration of the Consulate General in Benghazi, with the presence of the Greek community there.
Greece, both through business activities and through the presence of the Greek community there, can play a decisive role in the reconstruction of Libya and significantly contribute to the country's progress towards development.
Members of Parliament Mr. Georgios Koumoutsakos, Chairman, and Mr. Georgios Katrougkalos, Vice-Chairman of the Greece-Libya Parliamentary Friendship Group, will accompany the Greek diplomatic delegation.
