Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis had earlier a telephone conversation with his Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan. Mr. Gerapetritis welcomed the Joint Statement, issued by Armenia and Azerbaijan, which announces the mutual release of prisoners and confidence-building measures between the two parties, emphasizing to the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs that Greece supports efforts to achieve lasting peace in the South Caucasus region.
Mr. Gerapetritis discussed with his Armenian counterpart the latest developments in relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and briefed him on the results of yesterday's High Level Cooperation Council between Greece and Türkiye.
On his part, the Armenian Foreign Minister thanked Mr. Gerapetritis for Greece's support and welcomed the progress in Greek-Turkish relations as a positive development for the stability in the wider region.
Mr. Mirzoyan extended an invitation to the Greek Foreign Minister to visit Yerevan, which Mr. Gerapetritis accepted, stating that it would be scheduled promptly through diplomatic channels.
The two ministers will meet on Monday in Brussels, where on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council and on the initiative of Greece, a working breakfast of EU foreign ministers with the Armenian foreign minister as an official guest will be held.
Mr. Gerapetritis underlined the importance that Greece attaches to addressing the humanitarian needs of the displaced population and to fostering institutional dialogue between the EU and Armenia. Greece, he added, will actively contribute to both issues, supporting at the same time the ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.
