Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement on the developments in Belarus (19 August 2020)

Greece is monitoring the recent developments in Belarus with great concern and is in full agreement with the EU statement issued on 11 August, following the presidential elections of 9 August.

In this context, Greece underscores the urgent need for immediate de-escalation and avoidance of any further use of violence against citizens.

Greece stresses that the rule of law and fundamental rights and freedoms should be fully respected, as they constitute a prerequisite for the launching of a democratic dialogue, without restrictions, with the wider society of Belarus.

More specifically, Greece highlights the need to respect freedom of expression and to protect journalists and news media professionals.
