Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the completion of the ratification process of the Greek-Italian agreement on the delimitation of their respective maritime zones

Greece welcomes the adoption, yesterday by the Italian Senate of the Greek-Italian agreement on the delimitation of their respective maritime zones, which was signed in Athens in June 2020, with 223 votes in favor and only 2 abstentions, and completes its ratification process by the Italian legislature.

The agreement, which is expected to enter into force in the near future, reaffirms the commitment of Greece and of almost all its neighbouring countries to international law and in particular to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which reflects customary international law, and which all countries have an obligation to respect and apply.
