Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement to journalists following his participation in the International Conference in Support of Lebanon’s People and Sovereignty (Paris, 24.10.2024)

G. GERAPETRITIS: At a difficult time for the Middle East and for humanity, the French President has invited representatives of the G20, the European Union and the Arab world to an extraordinary meeting in Paris, today, to discuss ways of containing the crisis in Lebanon so that we can finally achieve the highly desired peace.

It is evident that the crisis in Lebanon has very serious consequences that could be further exacerbated, considering that there are thousands of migrants in Lebanon who currently find themselves in a state of absolute uncertainty. More than a million people have been displaced from their homes. We must address the overall humanitarian crisis we are currently facing.

The international community must increase the delivery of humanitarian aid. Greece has already sent humanitarian aid and will continue doing so through the European Civil Protection Mechanism and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

As part of the international community and as a member of the UN Security Council in a few days, Greece will always be at the forefront of efforts for peace, which is currently under serious threat.

JOURNALIST: Regarding the humanitarian aid, have you decided what amount you will offer?

G. GERAPETRITIS: We have already dispatched a cargo, which includes medical and other essential supplies. A second cargo will be dispatched immediately. In addition, financial assistance has already been pledged for the relief of people’s suffering.

Furthermore, I am in constant contact with the Lebanese government, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister to coordinate our efforts to deliver as much aid as possible to Lebanon.

However, it is important, and I would like to stress that, at this critical juncture, we must safeguard the security of the entire region.

We understand that the situation is extremely complex at the moment. There are several active war zones in the Middle East. We must all work in an organized manner. The international community must step up its efforts. Thank you very much.
