Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias’ statement following his meeting with his fYROM counterpart, Nikola Dimitrov (Ohrid, 12 April 2018)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias’ statement following his meeting with his fYROM counterpart, Nikola Dimitrov (Ohrid, 12 April 2018)I want to thank the interpreters, who make our lives easier during these negotiations. I want to thank my friend Nikola for the excellent hospitality, as always, because every time we meet, with difficult issues to discuss, beyond the issues we are actually resolving, we gain better mutual understanding. We will be meeting again in the coming time. What is certain is that we will be in Thessaloniki for the quadrilateral Cross-border Meeting on 3 and 4 May, and we will also be in Sounion, Attica, on 11 and 12 May, where we will finally discuss something else: the future of Europe.

I also want to thank the diplomats of the two states, our experts and academics who have made serious progress on the topics they have undertaken. Especially within this whole framework of joint actions and the joint development of projects, and on the issue of irredentism, which is very important to us. As you understand, the closer we get, resolving all of our issues, fewer and fewer issues are left to discuss. But they are also the most difficult issues. We took the positive steps we could take today, and both of us hope we will also succeed in taking the major steps – in making the most difficult ones easy. The major problems were already here – Nikola and I didn’t create them. We are trying to solve problems that were created in other eras by other people. But this is the job of diplomacy.

Thank you all very much.
