Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos made the following statement today, in Thessaloniki, in response to journalists’ question on the developments in Egypt:
“Right now, the Greeks are not facing a problem in Egypt. We are in ongoing contact with our Embassy, with the Patriarch of Alexandria, and with the representatives of Greek communities there, and we are being kept apprised of developments. We are monitoring the situation closely, and I believe that things will develop in such a manner as not to endanger the Greeks of Egypt.”
Responding to a question regarding the existence of a plan for evacuating the Greeks, should it prove necessary, Mr. Gerontopoulos replied that “there is no such issue at this time, but there is certainly a plan in case it proves necessary.”
